What are the issues? Facing Barriers Head On

Special education today faces a mountain of challenges and pretending otherwise doesn't help families or schools. The reality?
Overload: Teachers and specialists juggle caseloads so high it feels impossible to give every child what they need
Delays: Evaluations drag on, leaving families waiting months for answers.
Inequities: Multilingual learners and children from marginalized communities are disproportionately misidentified or underserved.
Outcomes: While Colorado outpaces the rest of the nation overall, students with disabilities consistently score below their peers.
These aren't abstract issues. They are barriers that students face every day.

At Miyahara and Associates, we believe in facing them head-on. We don't shy away from hard conversations. Instead we ask: What can we do differently?
When districts are overloaded, we provide overflow evaluations so children don't wait for services.
When families feel stuck, we offer coaching and consultation so they know their rights and options.
When systems feel inequitable, we design supports that life all children, instead of leaving some behind.
One of our core belief is this: systems must evolve to meet real needs. It isn't enough to "make do." Our children can't wait while the adults figure it out.
The good news? Change is possible. We've seen districts rebuild evaluation processes to cut months off timelines. We've seen schools create intervention systems that reduce referrals later. And we've seen families walk into meetings feeling overwhelmed and walking out with hope.
In our next post, we'll look at how to build foundational systems that last, because quick fixes aren't enought.
