Screenings
What Are Screenings?

Screenings are brief, universal checks used to identify students who may need additional academic, behavioral, or social-emotional support. They are not diagnostic evaluations. Instead, screenings help schools notice patterns early, respond proactively, and ensure students don’t fall through the cracks.

Effective screening systems are a cornerstone of strong MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) frameworks.
Why Screenings Matter

When implemented thoughtfully, screenings help schools:

-
Identify student needs early, before challenges escalate
-
Reduce bias by using consistent, data-informed processes
-
Support equitable access to interventions
-
Strengthen instructional and behavioral decision-making
-
Prevent unnecessary referrals to special education
Screenings are most powerful when they are paired with clear decision rules, follow-up supports, and progress monitoring.
Common Types of Screenings

Schools may use screenings in one or more of the following areas:

-
Academic (early literacy, math, language skills)
-
Behavioral (externalizing and internalizing behaviors)
-
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
-
Developmental (early childhood)
-
Mental Health Risk Indicators
The goal is not to label students — it’s to guide support.

-
Identify when further evaluation may be appropriate
-
Prepare questions for school meetings
-
Advocate effectively without escalating unnecessarily
We believe families deserve clear information, not confusion or fear.
How Screenings Connect to Evaluations

Screenings are not evaluations. They should never be used alone to determine eligibility for special education services.

When concerns persist despite intervention, screenings may help inform decisions about further evaluation, including Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs).

We help ensure that screenings are used as intended — as a starting point, not a conclusion.
