The space between..... where problems hide

When we think about special education, we often picture the big moments, the IEP meeting, a test score, a classroom placement, the number of minutes a specialist will be working with a students, but in reality, so much of what matters lives in the space between.

  • It's in the transition from one grade to another.

  • It's about communication between the teaching staff and service providers.

  • It's about creating access with Assistive Technology that will enhance a child's learning.

  • It's knowing when a parent doesn't understand something but doesn't feel safe asking.

The issue isn't lack of caring, it's a lack of thoughtful connection.

Our job is to bridge those gaps. We look at what happens before, during and after. We help families prepare for meetings so they can speak with confidence. We help schools build smoother transitions between grades, programs and services. And we help districts design systems that don't just look good on paper, but make sense for students. We help connect teams so that there's robust communication. Because when we address the "space between," children stop slipping through cracks and start finding their footing.

In our next post, we'll dig deeper into what the real issues are in today's special education syste, and how facing them head-on leads to change.
