How to ask the right questions at your child's IEP meeting

Empowerment through understanding

IEP meetings can feel overwhelming, lots of professionals, acronyms, and decisions that impact your child's learning. But here's the truth: parents are equal members of the IEP team. Knowing the right questions to ask helps you feel confident, builds collaboration and ensures that your child gets the supports they deserve.

At Miyahara and Associates, we've sat on both sides of the table. We know the most productive meetings are the one's where parents are heard, feel informed, and ready to engage.

1) Can you help me understand my child's current progress?

This question invites clarity. Ask for examples through the data that show how your child is performing now, not just what's written in the report. If they share information that you don't understand, ask them to explain what it means.

2) How will progress be measured and shared with me?

Progress monitoring is the heartbeat of the IEP. Ask what tools will be used (checklists, rubrics, data sheets) how often, and how you will get updates. There should be consistent communication between you and the providers. This can also help you reinforce strategies at home.

3) How can I support my child at home?

You are your child's first and most important teacher. Asking this question builds partnership and continuity between home and school. It shows your willingness to collaborate and reinforces your participation in the team.

Confidence through Connection

The IEP process works best when everyone at the table is focused on the same goal: helping your child succeed. Asking thoughtful questions isn't about challenging the team, it's about partnering with them.

If you'd like a second set of eyes on your child's IEP or just want help preparing for your next meeting, our team at Miyahara and Associates offers family-friendly IEP Reviews and consultation services. We're here to help you feel confident and supported every step of the way.
